『Hot in the Shade』は、KISSが従来の直球ハード・ロックを土台にしながら、メロディと曲調の振れ幅を広げた第15作だ。歯切れのよいリフ、軽快なビート、ポール・スタンレーとジーン・シモンズの対照的な歌声が、作品に豊かな起伏を与えている。多彩なソングライティングが際立つ一枚である。 大ヒット・バラード“Forever”の伸びやかなメロディを中心に、“Rise to It”の勢い、“Hide Your Heart”のドラマ性、“Little Caesar”の遊び心まで、収録曲の表情は非常に幅広い。荒々しいロック曲と叙情的なバラードが並ぶことで、バンドの持つ大衆性と遊び心が浮かび上がる。 収録曲数が多く、やや散漫にも感じられるが、その分バンドのさまざまな引き出しを一度に味わえる。“Silver Spoon”“King of Hearts”のような曲も、作品に彩りを添えている。“Betrayed”“Cadillac Dreams”のような曲でも、多彩なソングライティングと親しみやすいメロディが並び、バンドの引き出しの多さを示している。曲数が多い分だけ全体の焦点はやや拡散するが、その懐の深さこそが本作ならではの味わいだ。80年代末のKISSが、ライヴ映えするフックを保ったまま次の時代を見据えた、過渡期ならではの充実作と言える。

Hot in the Shade widens the range of melody and song styles while keeping straight-ahead hard rock as its base, on KISS’s fifteenth album. Crisp riffs, light beats and the contrasting voices of Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons give the record rich dynamics — a work in which varied songwriting stands out. Centered on the soaring melody of the hit ballad “Forever,” the faces of the songs are very wide-ranging, from the drive of “Rise to It” and the drama of “Hide Your Heart” to the playfulness of “Little Caesar.” With raw rockers set beside lyrical ballads, the band’s broad appeal and sense of fun come through. The large number of tracks can feel a little diffuse, but in exchange you can taste the band’s many facets at once, while cuts like “Silver Spoon” and “King of Hearts” add color. It is a transitional yet fulfilling record on which late-1980s KISS looked toward the next era while keeping stage-ready hooks.
