『Crazy Nights』は、KISSが太いギターを保ちながら、キーボードと大きなコーラスを前面に押し出した第14作だ。曲はコンパクトにまとまり、ポール・スタンレーとジーン・シモンズのヴォーカルが、それぞれ異なる色を加えていく。80年代型アリーナ・ロックへ大きく振り切った一枚である。 表題曲“Crazy Crazy Nights”の高揚感、“Reason to Live”のバラードとしての伸び、“Bang Bang You”の勢い、そして“Turn On the Night”の華やかさまで、アルバムは当時の流行を迷いなく取り込む。磨かれたプロダクションと大合唱コーラスが、ライヴ映えする一体感を生み出している。 キーボードを大胆に取り入れながらも、バンドの根にあるロックンロールの直進力は失われていない。“Hell or High Water”のようなハードな曲も、作品にメリハリを加えている。“My Way”“Thief in the Night”のような曲でも、磨かれたプロダクションとキャッチーなメロディが一貫して作品を彩っていく。キーボードを前面に出しつつも、バンドとしての一体感と大合唱の高揚感は少しも損なわれていない。時代の音を積極的に受け入れ、最大級のスケールで鳴らした本作は、80年代後半のKISSの充実を示す一枚と言える。

Crazy Nights keeps thick guitars while pushing keyboards and big choruses to the front on KISS’s fourteenth album. The songs are compactly built, and the vocals of Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons each add a different color — a record swinging hard toward 1980s-style arena rock. From the lift of the title track “Crazy Crazy Nights” and the balladic reach of “Reason to Live” to the drive of “Bang Bang You” and the flair of “Turn On the Night,” the album takes in the trends of the day without hesitation, and polished production and sing-along choruses create a stage-ready cohesion. Boldly incorporating keyboards, it still never loses the rock-and-roll drive at the band’s root, while a harder cut like “Hell or High Water” adds contrast. Embracing the era’s sound and playing it on the grandest scale, it is a record that shows KISS’s strength in the late 1980s.
