『As Daylight Dies』は、鋭いメタルコアと大合唱コーラスを両立し、KILLSWITCH ENGAGEが感情の振幅を広げた第4作だ。前作『The End of Heartache』で確立したハワード・ジョーンズ期のサウンドを受け継ぎつつ、メロディック・デス・メタルからの影響を再び前面に押し出している。プロデュースはアダム・Dとジョエル・ストロッツェルが手掛けた。ジャケットはベーシストのマイク・ダントニオが手掛けており、前作よりもメロディック・デス・メタル寄りの、重量感のある音像へと回帰している。 “My Curse”“The Arms of Sorrow”“This Is Absolution”といった代表曲が並び、いずれもビデオが制作された。激しいヴァースと、伸びやかなコーラスの対比が全編を貫く。全米ビルボード200では32位に達し、後にゴールド認定を獲得した。ハワード・ジョーンズの力強い歌声と、二本のギターが織りなす、充実したメタルコア作である。特別盤にはDIOの“Holy Diver”のカバーが収録され、ライブでも人気を博した。バンドが一段と広い聴衆へと届いた一枚だ。

As Daylight Dies is Killswitch Engage's fourth album, on which they balanced sharp metalcore with sing-along choruses to widen their emotional range. Carrying over the Howard Jones-era sound established on the previous The End of Heartache, they again pushed their melodic death metal influence to the fore. Production was handled by Adam D and Joel Stroetzel. The cover art was created by bassist Mike D'Antonio, and the album returns to a heftier, more melodic-death-metal-leaning sound than its predecessor. Signature songs like "My Curse," "The Arms of Sorrow" and "This Is Absolution" line up, all of which got videos. The contrast between fierce verses and soaring choruses runs throughout. It reached No. 32 on the US Billboard 200 and later earned gold certification. An accomplished metalcore work woven by Howard Jones's powerful voice and the two guitars. The special edition includes a cover of Dio's "Holy Diver," which also became a live favorite. It is a record that reached a still wider audience.
