Epica

『Epica』は、KAMELOTが厚いギター、シンフォニックな色彩、ロイ・カーンの陰影ある歌を駆使し、大きな物語を描いた第6作だ。ゲーテの『ファウスト』に着想を得たコンセプトの前編にあたり、主人公アリエルの葛藤を軸に、曲はメロディを中心に進みながら、静かな場面と壮大なコーラスを行き来してドラマを積み上げていく。重さと優雅さが自然に結び付き、コンセプトの世界が音楽の流れへ深く溶け込んでいる。 “Center of the Universe”“The Edge of Paradise”“Wander”“Descent of the Archangel”といった楽曲では、劇的な展開と印象的なメロディが緊密に結び付き、“Farewell”“A Feast for the Vain”“On the Coldest Winter Night”“The Mourning After (Carry On)”といった楽曲でも、繊細な叙情と劇的な高揚が交錯し、コンセプトの物語を丁寧に彩っている。随所に挿入されるインタールードが物語の流れを繋ぎ、アルバムを締めくくる“III Ways to Epica”まで、全体が一つの叙事詩として緊密に設計されている。次作『The Black Halo』と対をなす壮大な二部作の前編として、後の大作路線の基盤となった重要な一枚である。

Epica is the sixth album on which KAMELOT wielded thick guitars, symphonic color and Roy Khan’s shadowed singing to paint a large story. As the first part of a concept inspired by Goethe’s Faust, centered on the protagonist Ariel’s conflict, the songs advance around melody while moving between quiet passages and grand choruses to build drama. Heaviness and grace join naturally, and the world of the concept dissolves deeply into the flow of the music. On “Center of the Universe,” “The Edge of Paradise,” “Wander” and “Descent of the Archangel,” dramatic development and striking melody join tightly, and on “Farewell,” “A Feast for the Vain,” “On the Coldest Winter Night” and “The Mourning After (Carry On)” too, delicate lyricism and dramatic elation intersect, carefully coloring the concept’s story. Interludes inserted throughout tie the narrative, and through to the closing “III Ways to Epica” the whole is tightly designed as a single epic. As the first half of a grand two-part work paired with the following The Black Halo, it is an important record that became the foundation of the later grand path.
