The Black Halo

『The Black Halo』は、KAMELOTがダークなリフとシンフォニックなアレンジを重ね、ロイ・カーンの表情豊かな歌が物語を運ぶ、バンド屈指の名作だ。前作『Epica』から続くファウストをモチーフにしたコンセプトの完結編にあたり、劇的な展開が多くても、各曲のコーラスは明快で感情の芯を失わない。ヘヴィネス、哀感、壮大さが同じ世界観の中で緊密につながっている。 冒頭を飾る“March of Mephisto”ではディム・ボルギルのシャグラスがゲスト参加し悪魔的な迫力を添え、“The Haunting (Somewhere in Time)”ではエピカのシモーネ・シモンズが美しいデュエットを聴かせる。“When the Lights Are Down”“Abandoned”“Memento Mori”“The Black Halo”では、キャッチーさと劇性が高い次元で両立する。“Soul Society”“This Pain”“Nothing Ever Dies”といった楽曲でも、劇的な展開と強靭なメロディが緊密に結び付き、随所のインタールードが物語を繋ぐ。アルバム全体を一つの旅のように聴かせる構成力と、メロディの強さが最も鮮やかに結び付いた本作は、KAMELOTのコンセプト・アルバムの頂点として、シンフォニック・メタル史に輝く一枚である。

The Black Halo is one of the band’s finest works, on which KAMELOT layered dark riffs and symphonic arrangement while Roy Khan’s expressive singing carries the story. As the conclusion of the Faust-based concept continued from Epica, its choruses stay clear and never lose their emotional core despite the many dramatic turns. Heaviness, sorrow and grandeur connect tightly within a single world. The opening “March of Mephisto” features guest Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir, adding a demonic force, while “The Haunting (Somewhere in Time)” offers a beautiful duet with Simone Simons of Epica. On “When the Lights Are Down,” “Abandoned,” “Memento Mori” and “The Black Halo,” catchiness and drama meet at a high level. On “Soul Society,” “This Pain” and “Nothing Ever Dies” too, dramatic development and robust melody join tightly, with interludes throughout tying the story. With a structural command that makes the whole album play like a single journey and the most vivid union of melodic strength, it is the peak of KAMELOT’s concept albums and a record that shines in symphonic-metal history.
