『Karma』は、KAMELOTが壮麗なオーケストレーションとメタルの推進力を高い次元で結び付けた、初期の代表作だ。ロイ・カーンの表情豊かな歌唱が各曲の物語性を深く支え、重厚さと美しさを見事に両立させている。商業的にもバンドの評価を大きく高め、ヨーロッパを中心に確固たる支持を築くきっかけとなった。前作で確立した様式をさらに洗練させ、シンフォニック・パワー・メタルの一つの理想形へと踏み込んだ一枚である。 “Forever”“The Spell”“Karma”“Don't You Cry”といった楽曲では、キャッチーなメロディと劇的なアレンジが緊密に噛み合い、“Wings of Despair”“Temples of Gold”“Across the Highlands”といった楽曲でも、緊張感のあるリフと美しいメロディが結び付く。そして“Elizabeth”三部作（“Mirror, Mirror”“Requiem for the Innocent”“Fall from Grace”）では、血の伯爵夫人エリザベート・バートリを題材にした長大な物語を、緊張感を保ったまま組み上げる構成力が際立つ。重厚さと叙情、そして物語性が高い次元で融合した、KAMELOTの飛躍を象徴する名盤である。

Karma is an early signature work on which KAMELOT bound grand orchestration and metallic drive at a high level. Roy Khan’s expressive singing deeply supports the narrative of each song, splendidly balancing heaviness and beauty. It also greatly raised the band’s standing commercially, becoming the springboard for firm support centered on Europe. Refining the style established on the previous album, it steps into one ideal form of symphonic power metal. On “Forever,” “The Spell,” “Karma” and “Don’t You Cry,” catchy melody and dramatic arrangement mesh tightly, and on “Wings of Despair,” “Temples of Gold” and “Across the Highlands” too, tense riffs join beautiful melody. And the “Elizabeth” trilogy (“Mirror, Mirror,” “Requiem for the Innocent,” “Fall from Grace”) shows a structural command that builds a long tale of the blood countess Elizabeth Báthory while sustaining tension. Fusing heaviness, lyricism and narrative at a high level, it is a masterpiece emblematic of KAMELOT’s leap forward.
