『Sad Wings of Destiny』は、JUDAS PRIESTがヘヴィ・メタルの輪郭を、初めて自分たちの言葉で明確に描き始めた第2作だ。ロブ・ハルフォードは、高音の絶叫から陰りのある低音までを自在に使い分け、グレン・ティプトンとK.K.ダウニングのギターは、リフと旋律を複雑に交差させながら緊張感を高めていく。後のメタルの様式を決定づけた、歴史的に重要な一枚である。 冒頭の大作“Victim of Changes”の長い展開、切れ味鋭い“The Ripper”、そして叙情的な“Dreamer Deceiver”は、バンドの表現の幅を端的に示している。“Tyrant”の攻撃性、“Genocide”の重さ、“Deceiver”の疾走も、作品に多彩な陰影を与えている。ハード・ロックの土台を残しつつ、より劇的で緻密な音楽性が花開いている。 まだプログレッシヴな要素を残しながらも、後のヘヴィ・メタルへとつながる演奏と、劇的なイメージを、一気に鮮明にした点に本作の価値がある。ツイン・ギターの構築美と、ハルフォードの圧倒的な歌唱力が、すでに確立されている。ジャンルの黎明期を代表する、極めて重要な初期の名盤と言える。

Sad Wings of Destiny is the second album on which Judas Priest first clearly began to draw the outline of heavy metal in its own words. Rob Halford freely uses everything from a high scream to a shadowed low register, and the guitars of Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing raise tension while intricately crossing riffs and melody. A historically important record that defined the later style of metal. The long development of the opening epic “Victim of Changes,” the sharp “The Ripper” and the lyrical “Dreamer Deceiver” plainly show the band’s expressive breadth, while the aggression of “Tyrant,” the weight of “Genocide” and the speed of “Deceiver” give it varied shading. Keeping a hard-rock foundation, a more dramatic, precise musicality blooms. Its value lies in vividly bringing out, all at once, the playing and the dramatic image that would lead to later heavy metal, while still keeping progressive elements. The constructive beauty of the twin guitars and Halford’s overwhelming vocal ability are already established. It is an extremely important early masterpiece representative of the genre’s dawn.
