Look into the Future

『Look into the Future』は、JOURNEYが、後年のアリーナ・ロック像へと到達する前の、演奏の自由度を、まだ大きく保っていた時期の、意欲的な第2作だ。デビュー作の、ジャズ・ロック／プログレッシヴな路線を受け継ぎながらも、より楽曲としての形を、意識し始めている。ニール・ショーンのギターは、速さだけでなく、歌うようなフレーズで、曲の景色を丁寧に描き、グレッグ・ローリーの鍵盤とヴォーカルが、そこに、豊かな温度を加えている。 10分を超える壮大な表題曲“Look into the Future”の広がり、そして“On a Saturday Nite”の推進力から、ビートルズのカヴァー“It's All Too Much”、さらに“I'm Gonna Leave You”のブルース感まで、アルバムは、ハード・ロックと、プログレッシヴな感覚との間を、極めて自然に往復していく。“Anyway”“Midnight Dreamer”のような曲も、作品の魅力を伝えている。 まだ、後の大ヒット路線とは異なるものの、メロディを重視しようとする、その姿勢は、すでに明確に表れ始めている一枚だ。卓越した演奏力を軸としながらも、少しずつ、より開かれた方向へと歩み始めている。初期JOURNEYの、確かな演奏力と、その探究心とを、じっくりと伝える、興味深い一枚と言える。バンドの過渡期を映している。

Look into the Future is an ambitious second album from a period when Journey still largely kept freedom of playing, before reaching the later arena-rock image. While inheriting the debut’s jazz-rock/progressive direction, it begins to be more conscious of song form. Neal Schon’s guitar carefully draws the songs’ scenery with singing-like phrases, not speed alone, and Gregg Rolie’s keyboards and vocals add a rich warmth. From the expanse of the grand, over-ten-minute title track “Look into the Future” and the drive of “On a Saturday Nite” to a Beatles cover “It’s All Too Much” and the blues feel of “I’m Gonna Leave You,” the album moves extremely naturally between hard rock and a progressive sense, while cuts like “Anyway” and “Midnight Dreamer” convey the work’s appeal. Though still different from the later smash direction, a stance seeking to value melody already clearly begins to appear. While centered on outstanding playing, it gradually begins walking toward a more open direction. An intriguing record that carefully conveys early Journey’s sure playing and exploratory spirit — reflecting the band’s transition.
