『Next』は、JOURNEYが、まだ演奏志向の強かった初期の時期に、プログレッシヴな展開と、ハード・ロックの、直進的な力強さとを組み合わせた、第3作だ。この後、バンドがスティーヴ・ペリーを迎え、全く別の方向へと大きく進化していく、その直前の姿を捉えた、貴重な一枚である。ニール・ショーンのギターは、相変わらず流麗なフレーズを描き、グレッグ・ローリーの鍵盤と、味わい深いヴォーカルが、楽曲に、確かな温度を加えている。 冒頭“Spaceman”の躍動感、“People”の叙情、そして“Here We Are”のメロディから、ドラマティックな“Karma”まで、収録曲は、バンドが、後に、より大衆的な方向へと進む前の、独自の個性を、実によく伝えている。“Hustler”“Nickel & Dime”のような曲も、初期ならではの、演奏の魅力を伝えている。 初期JOURNEYが持っていた、高度な演奏技術と、飽くなき探究心とを、そのまま閉じ込めたような一枚だ。この作品を最後に、バンドは、ヒットを意識した、大きな路線転換へと踏み出していく。それゆえ、演奏バンドとしてのJOURNEYの、一つの到達点であり、同時に、大きな転機の直前を示す、興味深い作品と言える。バンドの進化の過程を知る上で、重要な一枚だ。

Next is the third album on which Journey, in an early period when it was still strongly playing-oriented, combines progressive development and the straight power of hard rock. A precious record capturing the band’s figure just before it welcomed Steve Perry and greatly evolved in a wholly different direction. Neal Schon’s guitar draws fluid phrases as ever, and Gregg Rolie’s keyboards and richly flavored vocals add a sure warmth. From the dynamism of the opener “Spaceman,” the lyricism of “People” and the melody of “Here We Are” to the dramatic “Karma,” the songs well convey the band’s own character before it later headed in a more popular direction, while cuts like “Hustler” and “Nickel & Dime” convey the playing appeal particular to the early era. A record that captures early Journey’s high playing technique and tireless exploratory spirit. With this work as its last, the band stepped into a great change of direction conscious of hits. Thus it is an intriguing work that is one arrival point for Journey as a playing band and, at the same time, shows just before a great turning point — an important record for knowing the band’s process of evolution.
