『Frontiers』は、スティーヴ・ペリーの伸びやかな歌声を中心に、ジョナサン・ケインの鮮やかなキーボードと、ニール・ショーンの硬質なギターとが、大きな風景を描き出す、傑作『Escape』に続く第8作だ。前作の、途方もない大成功を受け継ぎながらも、より硬質で、力強いロック色を、少し強めている。楽曲は、洗練されていながらも、リズム隊の、確かな推進力が、音を、しっかりと前へと運んでいく。 冒頭の、疾走する名曲“Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)”の力強さ、そして、感動的なバラードの代表曲“Faithfully”の、温かく深い情感まで、アルバムは、JOURNEYの持つ、幅広い豊かな表情を、余すことなく示している。“Send Her My Love”の叙情、“Chain Reaction”の勢い、そして“After the Fall”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。“Separate Ways”のシンセサイザー・リフは、時代を象徴する存在となった。 大きな会場で、力強く響き渡るメロディを、確かな演奏力で支えた、アリーナ・ロックの、まさに代表作と言える一枚だ。傑作『Escape』の後を受けても、その質を、少しも落とすことなく、バンドの充実期を、力強く継続させている。“Faithfully”と“Separate Ways”という、二つの永遠の名曲を生んだ、極めて完成度の高い、聴き応えのある傑作と言える。JOURNEYの黄金期を、力強く象徴する一枚だ。

Frontiers is the eighth album, following the masterpiece Escape, on which, around Steve Perry’s soaring voice, Jonathan Cain’s vivid keyboards and Neal Schon’s hard guitar draw a large scene. While inheriting the previous album’s tremendous success, it slightly strengthens a harder, more powerful rock color. The songs, while refined, have the rhythm section’s sure drive firmly carrying the sound forward. From the power of the opening speeding classic “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” to the warm, deep emotion of the moving ballad “Faithfully,” the album fully shows Journey’s wide, rich expression, while the lyricism of “Send Her My Love,” the momentum of “Chain Reaction” and a cut like “After the Fall” convey the work’s fullness. The synthesizer riff of “Separate Ways” became an era-symbolizing presence. A record that can be called a very representative work of arena rock, supporting melody that resounds powerfully in large venues with sure playing. Even following the masterpiece Escape, without lowering its quality in the least, it powerfully continues the band’s fulfilling period. Producing two eternal classics, “Faithfully” and “Separate Ways,” it is an extremely polished, engaging masterpiece — a record that powerfully symbolizes Journey’s golden age.
