『Evolution』は、JOURNEYが、ハード・ロックの、確かな推進力を保ちながらも、より大きく開かれたメロディと、豪快なコーラスへと、力強く進んだ第5作だ。前作『Infinity』での、スティーヴ・ペリー加入による、大きな路線転換を、さらに推し進めている。ペリーの伸びやかで美しい声、ニール・ショーンの流麗なギター、そしてグレッグ・ローリーの鍵盤が、楽曲に、確かな高揚感と、豊かな温かさを与えている。新ドラマー、スティーヴ・スミスも加入した。 バンドにとって、初のトップ20ヒットとなった、心地よい“Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'”の親しみやすさから、疾走する“Just the Same Way”の爽快感まで、アルバムは、バンドの卓越した演奏力を、より多くの聴き手へと届く、ポップな説得力へと、巧みに変えていく。“City of the Angels”“Too Late”“Do You Recall”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。 卓越した演奏バンドから、幅広い大衆へと届く、メロディアスなロック・バンドへの道を、この作品で、はっきりと切り開いた、重要な一枚だ。技巧と、キャッチーさとの、絶妙なバランスが心地よい。次作『Departure』を経て、傑作『Escape』での大爆発へとつながる、その助走を、力強く感じさせる、充実した一枚と言える。バンドの着実な成長が伝わる。

Evolution is the fifth album on which Journey, while keeping hard rock’s sure drive, powerfully advances toward more widely open melody and bold choruses. It pushes the great change of direction from Steve Perry’s joining on the previous Infinity further. Perry’s soaring, beautiful voice, Neal Schon’s fluid guitar and Gregg Rolie’s keyboards give the songs a sure lift and rich warmth. The new drummer Steve Smith also joined. From the accessibility of the pleasant “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’,” the band’s first Top 20 hit, to the exhilaration of the speeding “Just the Same Way,” the album deftly turns the band’s outstanding playing into pop conviction that reaches more listeners, while cuts like “City of the Angels,” “Too Late” and “Do You Recall” convey the work’s fullness. An important record that clearly opened the road from an outstanding playing band to a melodic rock band reaching a wide public. The exquisite balance of technique and catchiness feels good. A fulfilling record that powerfully evokes the run-up leading, via the next Departure, to the great explosion of the masterpiece Escape — conveying the band’s steady growth.
