Departure

『Departure』は、JOURNEYが、ライヴ感あふれる、生々しい演奏を軸に、スティーヴ・ペリーの歌を、より強く、印象的なフックへと結び付けた第6作だ。次作の傑作『Escape』での、あの大爆発の直前にあたる、充実期の一枚である。ニール・ショーンのギターは、ペリーの歌を力強く押し上げ、ロス・ヴァロリーとスティーヴ・スミスによるリズム隊は、軽快さと、確かな重量感とを、見事に両立させている。 冒頭“Any Way You Want It”の、直進する爽快な勢い、“Walks Like a Lady”の弾むようなノリ、そして“Someday Soon”“Line of Fire”“Where Were You”のような曲まで、アルバムは、洗練されながらも、決して生々しい手触りを失っていない。ライヴ・バンドとしての、彼らの持ち味が、色濃く表れた内容だ。 通して聴けば、速い曲、ミドル・テンポ、そして抑えた場面の、絶妙な配置が、アルバム全体の呼吸を、豊かに作り出していることが分かる一枚だ。派手な部分だけを強調するのではなく、感情を溜める時間を、しっかりと残すことで、最後に訪れる、コーラスやギターの抜けが、より鮮明に感じられる。JOURNEYの、ロック・バンドとしての成長と、その勢いを示す、力強い充実作と言える。

Departure is the sixth album on which Journey, around raw, live-feeling playing, binds Steve Perry’s singing to stronger, more striking hooks. A record of a fulfilling period, just before the great explosion of the next masterpiece Escape. Neal Schon’s guitar powerfully lifts Perry’s singing, and the rhythm section of Ross Valory and Steve Smith beautifully unites lightness and sure weight. From the straight, exhilarating momentum of the opener “Any Way You Want It” and the bouncing feel of “Walks Like a Lady” to cuts like “Someday Soon,” “Line of Fire” and “Where Were You,” the album, while refined, never loses a raw feel. Content strongly showing their strengths as a live band. A record on which, listened through, the exquisite placement of fast songs, mid-tempo and restrained passages richly creates the whole album’s breath. Rather than emphasizing only flashy parts, by firmly keeping time to build emotion, the release of the choruses and guitar that finally comes feels more vivid. Showing Journey’s growth and momentum as a rock band, it is a powerful, fulfilling work.
