『Whoracle』は、IN FLAMESが、鋭く刻むリフ、流麗で美しいツイン・ギター、そして激しく咆哮するヴォーカルを、極めて高い密度でまとめ上げた、充実の第3作だ。前作『The Jester Race』で確立した、あのイエテボリ・サウンドを、さらに洗練させている。楽曲は、あくまで速く、そして重いが、その旋律が、絶えず美しく流れ続けているため、その暴力性の中にも、明確で確かな感情の線が、しっかりと残されている。バンドの、円熟しつつある実力が光る一枚である。 冒頭を飾る、疾走する名曲“Jotun”の力強さ、そして“Food for the Gods”のドラマ性、さらに“Gyroscope”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“The Hive”“Dialogue with the Stars”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。デペッシュ・モードの“Everything Counts”のカヴァーも収録された、意欲的な内容だ。幻想的で美しい導入や、曲間の巧みなつながりが、アルバム全体を、まるで一つの壮大な世界のように聴かせる。 メロディック・デス・メタルが持つ、あの冷たさと、美しさとを、極めて鮮明に示してみせた一枚だ。攻撃性と、叙情性とが、高い次元で融合しており、その完成度は、初期の頂点の一つと言える。イエテボリ・サウンドの、その充実を象徴する、力強く聴き応えのある傑作と言える。バンドの充実が光る一枚だ。

Whoracle is a fulfilling third album on which In Flames pulls together sharply chopping riffs, fluid, beautiful twin guitars and fiercely roaring vocals at extremely high density. It further refines the Gothenburg sound established on the previous The Jester Race. The songs, while fast and heavy, keep their melody beautifully flowing ceaselessly, so a clear, sure emotional line is firmly kept even within the violence. A record where the band’s maturing ability shines. From the power of the speeding opening classic “Jotun” and the drama of “Food for the Gods” to a cut like “Gyroscope,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “The Hive” and “Dialogue with the Stars” convey the work’s fullness. Ambitious content that also includes a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Everything Counts.” Fantastical, beautiful introductions and deft connections between songs let the whole album be heard like one grand world. A record that showed extremely vividly the coldness and beauty melodic death metal holds. Aggression and lyricism fuse at a high level, and its polish is one of the early peaks.
