『Siren Charms』は、IN FLAMESが、メロディック・デス・メタルの、あの攻撃性を、しっかりと残しながらも、冷たく抑制された、独特の空気感と、よりモダンな音色とを、大きく強めた、実験的な作品だ。ドイツのスタジオで録音された本作は、バンドの、また新たな側面を、はっきりと示している。ギターのリフは、以前よりも、より簡潔に響き、アンダース・フリーデンのヴォーカルや、電子的なテクスチャーが、楽曲全体の印象を、大きく左右している。より内省的な内容だ。 冒頭“In Plain View”の力強い推進力、そして“Everything's Gone”のドラマ性、さらに“Paralyzed”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Through Oblivion”“When the World Explodes”のような曲も、作品の独自性を伝えている。従来のファンの、その期待を、そのままなぞる作品ではないからこそ、バンドが、また別の感情表現を、深く探った、貴重な記録として、聴く価値がある。 夜のような、深く美しい陰影を、その内に持った一枚だ。よりオルタナティヴ・ロックに接近した、その大胆な作風は、賛否を呼んだものの、バンドの、飽くなき探究心を、力強く示している。変化を恐れないIN FLAMESの、その一面を、鮮やかに捉えた、聴き応えのある意欲作と言える。バンドの新たな挑戦が光る一枚だ。

Siren Charms is an experimental work on which In Flames, while firmly keeping melodic death metal’s aggression, greatly strengthens a cold, restrained, distinctive atmosphere and a more modern tone. Recorded in a German studio, it clearly shows yet another side of the band. The guitar riffs resound more concisely than before, and Anders Fridén’s vocals and electronic textures largely influence the whole songs’ impression. More introspective content. From the powerful drive of the opener “In Plain View” and the drama of “Everything’s Gone” to a cut like “Paralyzed,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Through Oblivion” and “When the World Explodes” convey the work’s originality. Precisely because it is not a work that merely traces former fans’ expectations, it is worth hearing as a precious record on which the band deeply explored yet another emotional expression. A record holding a deep, beautiful, night-like shading within. Its bold style, approaching alternative rock more, drew mixed opinions, yet it powerfully shows the band’s tireless inquiry. An engaging, ambitious work that vividly captured a side of In Flames unafraid of change — a record where the band’s new challenge shines.
