Battles

Battles connects In Flames’ metallic guitar push with more open vocal melody and a carefully modern sound. The riffs retain weight and sharpness, yet the songs reach for wide choruses and a strong melodic-rock accessibility. The drums stay focused on forward motion, while electronic textures and spacious sounds add a cold glow around the arrangements. Aggression and catchiness share the same frame, giving the record a direct emotional force. The album does not hide the changes listeners may hear from the band’s earlier work. Instead, it turns them into its identity through vocal hooks, contrasts of tone and release in the choruses. Heavy guitar can be followed by transparent melody, and restrained passages rise into larger refrains with clear shape. At volume, the low-end push, guitar contours and layers surrounding the vocal lines become vivid. Battles broadens In Flames’ modern-metal language while delivering feeling through strong melody.
