Sounds of a Playground Fading

『Sounds of a Playground Fading』は、IN FLAMESが、メロディック・デス・メタル由来の、あのギター・フレーズを、しっかりと残しながらも、より直線的で、モダンな音像へと踏み込んだ、大きな転換作だ。創設メンバーであった、ギタリストのイェスパー・ストロムブラードが脱退した後、制作された、初のアルバムにあたる。重く力強いリフ、電子的な質感、そして、アンダース・フリーデンの、感情的で表現力豊かな歌が、緊張感のある楽曲を、力強く形作っている。バンドの、新たな一歩を刻んだ一枚だ。 冒頭の表題曲“Sounds of a Playground Fading”の力強さ、そして“Deliver Us”の攻撃性、さらに“Where the Dead Ships Dwell”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Fear Is the Weakness”“All for Me”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。過去の様式を、ただそのまま繰り返すのではなく、ヘヴィなロックとしての、即効性を、より強めた点が、大きな特徴となっている。 創設メンバーの脱退という、大きな転換期にありながらも、バンドは、その歩みを、力強く前進させてみせた一枚だ。ビョーン・イェロッテを中心とした、新体制での、確かな一体感が感じられる。変化の途上にある、IN FLAMESの、その新たな表情を、鮮やかに捉えた、聴き応えのある充実作と言える。バンドの新たな決意が光る一枚だ。

Sounds of a Playground Fading is a great transitional work on which In Flames, while firmly keeping the guitar phrases derived from melodic death metal, steps into a more straight, modern sound. It is the first album made after the departure of the founding guitarist Jesper Strömblad. Heavy, powerful riffs, electronic texture and Anders Fridén’s emotional, expressive singing powerfully form tense songs. A record inscribing a new step for the band. From the power of the opening title track “Sounds of a Playground Fading” and the aggression of “Deliver Us” to a cut like “Where the Dead Ships Dwell,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Fear Is the Weakness” and “All for Me” convey the work’s fullness. Its great distinction is strengthening the immediacy as heavy rock, rather than merely repeating past styles as is. A record on which, even in the great turning point of a founding member’s departure, the band powerfully advanced its steps. A sure unity in the new lineup centered on Björn Gelotte can be felt.
