『II』は、HARDLINEが力強いヴォーカル、厚いコーラス、硬質なギターを揃え、約10年ぶりにメロディック・ハード・ロックへ力強く戻った第2作だ。2002年にフロンティアーズから発表された。ジョニー・ジョエリを中心に、元ザ・ストームのジョシュ・ラモス(ギター)らを迎え、ジョーイ・ジョエリが参加する最後の作品ともなった。楽曲は大きなフックを持ちながら、リズムには適度な重さがあり、甘さだけに寄らない。 冒頭の“Hold Me Down”の疾走から、“Paralyzed”、デビュー期に書かれた“Face the Night”や“Do or Die”、“Your Eyes”、締めの“This Gift”まで、往年の質感と当時の音を丁寧に橋渡ししている。爽快なロック・ナンバーと感情的なバラードの対比が、アルバムを豊かにする。ジョニーはこの時期アクセル・ルディ・ペルのバンドでも歌い、その堂々たる歌唱がここでも作品の核となっている。デビュー作の輝きを知るファンの期待に応えつつ、新しい一歩を刻んだ、大きく歌えるメロディを求める人に薦めたい久々の復活作だ。かつての名バンドが確かに息を吹き返したことを、力強く告げる一枚である。

II is the second album, on which Hardline — with powerful vocals, thick choruses and hard guitar — returned forcefully to melodic hard rock after about a decade. Released on Frontiers in 2002. Around Johnny Gioeli, it brought in Josh Ramos (guitar, ex-The Storm) and others, and became the last album to feature Joey Gioeli. The songs carry big hooks while the rhythm has a suitable weight, never leaning on sweetness alone. From the racing opener “Hold Me Down,” through “Paralyzed” and the debut-era-written “Face the Night,” “Do or Die” and “Your Eyes,” to the closer “This Gift,” it carefully bridges the old feel and the sound of the time. The contrast of bracing rockers and emotional ballads enriches the album. In this period Johnny also sang in Axel Rudi Pell’s band, and his commanding voice is the core here too. Answering longtime fans’ expectations while taking a new step — a record that powerfully announces a great band brought back to life.
