『Double Eclipse』は、ジョニー・ジョエリの力強く伸びるヴォーカルとニール・ショーンの流麗なギターを中心に、HARDLINEが大きなフックを連ねたデビュー作だ。ブルネットというバンド出身のジョエリ兄弟(弟ジョーイがギター)に、ジャーニーのニール・ショーン、トッド・ジェンセン(ベース)、ディーン・カストロノヴォ(ドラム)が加わった編成で、1992年にMCAから発表された。ヴァン・ヘイレンやMr.ビッグらとのツアーで注目を集めた、メロディック・ハード・ロック屈指の名盤である。 曲は太いリフで走りながら、コーラスでは一気に開放感を作り出す。技巧のあるギターは随所で鮮烈だが、あくまで歌を引き立てるために機能する。カナダのストリートハートで知られる“Hot Cherie”のカヴァーや“Takin' Me Down”がヒットし、ショーンによる短いギター・インスト“31-91”、大作“In the Hands of Time”も収められた。ジョニー・ジョエリはのちにアクセル・ルディ・ペルやクラッシュ40でも活躍することになる。メロディック・ハード・ロックの快感をまっすぐ届ける、時代を超えて愛される一枚だ。

Double Eclipse is the debut on which Hardline strung together big hooks around Johnny Gioeli’s powerful, soaring vocals and Neal Schon’s fluid guitar. The Gioeli brothers (younger brother Joey on guitar), from the band Brunette, joined with Journey’s Neal Schon, Todd Jensen (bass) and Deen Castronovo (drums), and it was released on MCA in 1992. It drew attention through tours with Van Halen and Mr. Big — a standout of melodic hard rock. Songs run on thick riffs, then open wide in the choruses. The skillful guitar is vivid throughout but always serves the vocal. A cover of “Hot Cherie,” known via Canada’s Streetheart, and “Takin' Me Down” were hits, and Schon’s short guitar instrumental “31-91” and the epic “In the Hands of Time” are also here. Johnny Gioeli would later work with Axel Rudi Pell and Crush 40. A record that delivers the thrill of melodic hard rock head-on — loved across generations.
