Human Nature

『Human Nature』は、HARDLINEがデビュー作の熱量を意識し、太いギターと大きなコーラスで王道を鳴らした第5作だ。2016年にフロンティアーズから発表された。ジョニー・ジョエリ(ヴォーカル)を中心に、ジョシュ・ラモスがギターで復帰し、アレッサンドロ・デル・ヴェッキオ(鍵盤/プロデュース)、アンナ・ポルタルーピ(ベース)、フランチェスコ・ヨヴィーノ(ドラム)が固める。全曲がデル・ヴェッキオとジョエリの共作である。 冒頭の“Where Will We Go from Here”から、印象的な“Nobody's Fool”、ブルージーな“Trapped in Muddy Waters”、力強い“United We Stand”、締めの“Fighting the Battle”まで、フックの効いた楽曲が並ぶ。『Double Eclipse』以来の重さを取り戻そうとする意欲が全編に表れ、翌2017年にはデビュー25周年を祝うツアーも行われた。歌を主役に据えつつ、演奏の厚みでドラマを作る姿勢は一貫している。ジョエリの張りのある歌声とバンドの熱量が噛み合った、デビュー作の精神を現代に甦らせる充実したメロディック・ハード・ロック作だ。

Human Nature is the fifth album, on which Hardline, conscious of the debut’s heat, played the classic style with thick guitar and big choruses. Released on Frontiers in 2016. Around Johnny Gioeli (vocals), Josh Ramos returned on guitar, with Alessandro Del Vecchio (keys/production), Anna Portalupi (bass) and Francesco Jovino (drums) locking it down. Every song is a Del Vecchio/Gioeli co-write. From the opener “Where Will We Go from Here,” the striking “Nobody's Fool,” the bluesy “Trapped in Muddy Waters,” the forceful “United We Stand,” to the closer “Fighting the Battle,” hook-laden songs line up. A drive to reclaim the weight not heard since Double Eclipse runs throughout, and in 2017 a tour celebrating the debut’s 25th anniversary followed. The stance of building drama through the density of the playing while keeping the vocal in the lead stays consistent. Gioeli’s taut voice and the band’s heat mesh — a satisfying melodic hard-rock record that revives the debut’s spirit for today.
