『Life』は、HARDLINEが再びデビュー作の硬質なハード・ロックへ寄り、力強い歌と骨太な演奏で押し出した第6作だ。2019年にフロンティアーズから発表された本作から、マリオ・ペルクダーニ(ギター)とマルコ・ディ・サルヴィア(ドラム)が加わった。ジョニー・ジョエリ(ヴォーカル)、アレッサンドロ・デル・ヴェッキオ(鍵盤/プロデュース)、アンナ・ポルタルーピ(ベース)という布陣である。 冒頭の“Place to Call Home”から疾走し、“Take a Chance”やパワー・バラード“Page of Your Life”がフックを添える。クイーンの“Who Wants to Live Forever”のカヴァーも収録され、ジョエリの歌の表現力を際立たせている。ペルクダーニのギターは切れ味があり、リフとソロの双方で曲を引き締め、リブ・ビーチやニール・ショーンにも通じる華やかさを見せる。“Story of My Life”や締めの“My Friend”まで粒ぞろいで、前作より一段と重心を落とした音作りのなか、派手さより楽曲の芯で聴かせる、力強い一枚だ。新体制がバンドに新鮮な活力をもたらしたことも伝わってくる好盤である。

Life is the sixth album, on which Hardline leaned again toward the hard rock of the debut, pushing forward with strong vocals and beefy playing. From this 2019 Frontiers release, Mario Percudani (guitar) and Marco Di Salvia (drums) joined. The lineup is Johnny Gioeli (vocals), Alessandro Del Vecchio (keys/production) and Anna Portalupi (bass). It races from the opener “Place to Call Home,” with “Take a Chance” and the power ballad “Page of Your Life” adding hooks. A cover of Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever” is also included, highlighting Gioeli’s expressive singing. Percudani’s guitar is sharp, tightening the songs in both riffs and solos, showing a flash akin to Reb Beach or Neal Schon. Consistently strong through “Story of My Life” and the closer “My Friend,” and within a lower-centered sound than the previous album, it wins you over with the songs’ core rather than flash — a powerful record. You can feel the new lineup bringing fresh vitality to the band.
