『Self Destruction Blues』は、危険なロックンロールの熱とストリート感覚を詰め込み、HANOI ROCKSの初期衝動を刻んだ一作だ。本作は新録のスタジオ・アルバムではなく、シングルのB面や、デモ、EP収録曲などをまとめた編集盤である。フィンランド、スウェーデン、イングランドの複数のスタジオで録音された音源で構成されている。初期のシングルやそのB面が中心で、まだアルバム未収録だった楽曲を一枚に集めた内容となっている。本作を携えたツアーで、バンドは初めてアジアへと足を運んだ。 フィンランドのシングル・チャートで1位を記録した“Love's an Injection”をはじめ、“Taxi Driver”“Problem Child”といった楽曲が並ぶ。ジャケットにはRazzleが写っているが、実際の演奏はギップ・カジーノが担っている。散発的な音源を寄せ集めた一枚ながら、初期HANOI ROCKSの荒々しい魅力が凝縮された、ファンにとって見逃せない作品である。高まりつつあったバンドへの注目に応える形で編まれた一枚でもある。オリジナル・アルバムとは異なる位置づけながら、初期の名曲を辿るうえで欠かせない。

Self Destruction Blues is a record that captured the early impulse of Hanoi Rocks, packed with the heat of dangerous rock'n'roll and a street sensibility. It is not a newly recorded studio album but a compilation gathering single B-sides, demos and EP tracks. It is made up of material recorded at various studios in Finland, Sweden and England. Centered on early singles and their B-sides, it gathers songs that had not yet appeared on an album. Touring behind it, the band reached Asia for the first time. Songs like "Taxi Driver" and "Problem Child" line up, led by "Love's an Injection," which reached No. 1 on the Finnish singles chart. Razzle appears on the cover, but the actual playing was handled by Gyp Casino. Though it gathers scattered material, it is a work not to be missed by fans, concentrating the raw appeal of early Hanoi Rocks. It was also compiled in response to the growing attention the band was receiving. Though it sits apart from their proper studio albums, it is essential for tracing their early gems.
