Oriental Beat

『Oriental Beat』は、パンクの切れ味とグラムの華やかさを混ぜ、HANOI ROCKSが独自のストリート感覚を強めた第二作だ。この頃バンドはロンドンへと拠点を移し、Advision Studiosで本作を録音した。より都会的で荒々しいロックンロールへと踏み込んだが、後にバンド自身は、プロデューサーによるミックスに不満を残す一枚だったと振り返っている。それでもマッコイのソングライティングは冴えており、グラム・パンクとしての完成度は着実に高まっている。バンドはこの前後にロンドンへ本格的に移り住んだ。 “Motorvatin'”“Oriental Beat”“M.C. Baby”といった、切れのある楽曲が並ぶ。マッコイの書く楽曲と、モンローのカリスマ的なヴォーカルが、荒削りな音の中でも確かな輝きを放っている。制作面での不本意さはありながらも、初期HANOI ROCKSの生々しいエネルギーを捉えた一枚だ。バンドが世界へと歩みを進める過程を刻んだ、重要な作品である。本作の後、ドラマーがギップ・カジーノからRazzleへと交代し、いわゆる「決定版」の布陣が固まることになる。初期作ならではの粗削りな魅力を持つ一枚だ。

Oriental Beat is Hanoi Rocks' second album, on which they strengthened their own street sensibility by mixing the sharpness of punk with the glamour of glam. Around this time the band moved its base to London and recorded the album at Advision Studios. They stepped into a more urban, raw rock'n'roll, though the band would later look back on it as a record left unsatisfying by the producer's mix. Even so, McCoy's songwriting is sharp, and their completeness as a glam-punk band steadily grew. Around this time the band moved permanently to London. Incisive songs like "Motorvatin'," "Oriental Beat" and "M.C. Baby" line up. McCoy's songwriting and Monroe's charismatic vocals shine clearly even within the rough sound. Despite the dissatisfaction on the production side, it is a record that captures the raw energy of early Hanoi Rocks. An important work marking the band's progress toward the world. After this album, the drummer changed from Gyp Casino to Razzle, and the so-called definitive lineup fell into place. It is a record with the rough-hewn charm unique to their early works.
