Firebirth

『Firebirth』は、GOTTHARDが、新たなヴォーカリストとして、ニック・メーダーを迎え、温かいメロディ、ブルージーなギター、そして堅実なバンド・グルーヴで、その再出発を、力強く刻んだ作品だ。前作の後、看板であったスティーヴ・リーを、不慮の事故で失うという、あまりにも大きな悲劇を乗り越えて制作された。過去のバンドの持ち味を、大切に受け継ぎながらも、楽曲は、決して悲壮さだけに寄ることなく、前へと進むための、確かな明るさを持っている。 冒頭“Starlight”の力強い推進力、“Give Me Real”の勢い、そして叙情的な“Remember It's Me”まで、力強いロック・ナンバーと、情感的なバラードとが、自然に並び、バンドの、幅広い魅力を、改めて示している。“Fight”“Shine”のような曲も、バンドの完全復活を告げている。ニック・メーダーの歌声は、リーとは異なりながらも、バンドに、確かに新たな生命を吹き込んでいる。 計り知れない喪失という、大きな困難を受け止めながらも、それでもなお、GOTTHARDらしさを、力強く確認することができる、極めて重要な節目の一枚だ。悲しみを乗り越え、前へと進もうとする、バンドの強い意志が、全編にみなぎっている。新たなヴォーカリストと共に、力強い再起を果たした、感動的で意義深い作品と言える。

Firebirth is a work on which Gotthard, welcoming Nic Maeder as its new vocalist, powerfully inscribes its restart with warm melody, bluesy guitar and steady band groove. It was made after overcoming the all-too-great tragedy of losing the flagship Steve Lee in an accident following the previous album. While carefully inheriting the band’s former strengths, the songs, never leaning on grief alone, hold a sure brightness for moving forward. From the powerful drive of the opener “Starlight” and the momentum of “Give Me Real” to the lyrical “Remember It’s Me,” powerful rock numbers and emotional ballads line up naturally, again showing the band’s wide appeal, while cuts like “Fight” and “Shine” announce the band’s full revival. Nic Maeder’s voice, while different from Lee’s, surely breathes new life into the band. An extremely important milestone on which, while taking in the great difficulty of an immeasurable loss, one can still powerfully reaffirm Gotthard’s character. The band’s strong will to overcome sorrow and move forward fills the whole. Achieving a powerful comeback with a new vocalist, it is a moving, significant work.
