Awake

『Awake』は、前作の暗く重い路線をさらに濃くしたGODSMACKの第2作だ。プロデュースはマドロックとサリー・エルナが共同で手掛け、マサチューセッツ州ヘイヴァーヒルの倉庫を改装したスタジオで録音された。トミー・スチュワートがフル参加した最後のアルバムでもある。重いグルーヴと不穏なムードを軸に、バンドは攻撃性と緊張感を一段と高めている。 表題曲“Awake”は骨太なリフでバンド屈指のアンセムとなり、米海軍の広告にも使用された。“Greed”“Bad Magick”“Sick of Life”も強烈な推進力を持ち、スポークン・ワード曲“Vampires”はバンドに初のグラミー・ノミネート(最優秀ロック・インストゥルメンタル部門)をもたらした。本作の多くはツアーの合間に書かれ、初期の勢いをそのまま音に刻んでいる。“Sick of Life”もまた米海軍の広告に使われ、バンドの攻撃的なリフはこの時期に広く浸透した。楽曲は総じて速く硬く、初期GODSMACKの魅力を凝縮している。本作は米ビルボード200で初登場5位を記録し、2×プラチナを達成している。前作の勢いを保ちつつ、さらにダークで攻撃的な世界観を深めた一枚だ。

Awake is the second album, deepening the dark, heavy direction of the debut. Co-produced by Mudrock and Sully Erna, it was recorded in a converted warehouse studio in Haverhill, Massachusetts. It is also the last album on which Tommy Stewart participated fully. Around heavy grooves and an uneasy mood, the band raises its aggression and tension further. The title track "Awake" became one of the band's foremost anthems with its sturdy riff and was used in US Navy advertisements. "Greed," "Bad Magick" and "Sick of Life" carry intense drive too, and the spoken-word "Vampires" brought the band its first Grammy nomination (Best Rock Instrumental). It debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 and reached double platinum. Keeping the momentum of the debut while deepening an even darker, more aggressive world.
