『Insanity and Genius』は、GAMMA RAYが疾走するジャーマン・メタルの勢いと大きく歌えるメロディを、より硬いリフの感触でまとめた第3作だ。ギターは直線的に走り、リズム隊はスピードの中でも輪郭を崩さない。高音域のヴォーカルと厚いコーラスが、宇宙的な広がりと戦闘的な推進力を同時に作り出している。ラルフ・シーパースが参加した最後のスタジオ作としても知られている。
“Tribute to the Past”“No Return”“Future Madhouse”“Gamma Ray”といった楽曲では、勢いと歌の強さが丁寧に配分されている。表題曲“Insanity and Genius”や“The Cave Principle”“Brothers”のような楽曲にも、バンドの初期像が確かな輪郭で刻まれている。“Last Before the Storm”“18 Years”“Heal Me”といった楽曲にも、疾走感とメロディの強さが同居している。この作品を最後にラルフ・シーパースはバンドを去り、後にプライマル・フィアを結成することになる。パワー・メタルの定型をなぞりながらも、速いリフの量ではなく、サビへ向けて和声とリズムがどう上昇感を作るかにこそ、本作の聴きどころがある。バンドの第一期を締めくくる、充実した一枚である。

Insanity and Genius is the third album on which GAMMA RAY brought together the momentum of racing German metal and big singable melody with a harder riff feel. The guitar runs in straight lines, and the rhythm section keeps its outline even within speed. High-register vocals and thick choruses create cosmic breadth and combative drive at once. It is also known as the last studio album on which Ralf Scheepers took part.
On “Tribute to the Past,” “No Return,” “Future Madhouse” and “Gamma Ray,” momentum and vocal strength are carefully distributed. Songs like the title track “Insanity and Genius,” “The Cave Principle” and “Brothers” carve the band’s early image with a firm outline. Tracing the template of power metal, the highlight of this record lies not in the quantity of fast riffs but in how harmony and rhythm build a rising feel toward the chorus. It is a full record that caps the band’s first period.
