『Land of the Free』は、カイ・ハンセン自身の歌を前面に置き、GAMMA RAYがスピード・メタルの高揚感を強く取り戻した第4作だ。明るく抜けるメロディと鋭いリフが、アルバムを一気に走らせている。ヴォーカリストの交代という転機を、ハンセンは自らマイクを握ることで乗り越え、バンドの新たな黄金期の幕を開けた。 “Rebellion in Dreamland”“Man on a Mission”“Land of the Free”“Time to Break Free”といった楽曲では、疾走感と壮大なメロディが理想的に結び付いている。“Fairytale”“Salvation's Calling”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した創造力が息づいている。“Gods of Deliverance”“Afterlife”“Abyss of the Void”といった楽曲にも、壮大なメロディと疾走感が息づいている。本作は多くのファンとメディアから絶賛され、GAMMA RAYの代表作の一つとして今なお高い評価を得ている。ヘルウィンのミヒャエル・キスケやブラインド・ガーディアンのハンジ・キュルシュといったゲストの声も彩りになるが、核にあるのはハンセンの作曲とバンドの前向きな推進力である。パワー・メタルの自由な感覚を鮮やかに鳴らした、代表作の一枚だ。

Land of the Free is the fourth album on which GAMMA RAY strongly regained the elation of speed metal, placing Kai Hansen’s own singing at the front. Bright, clear melody and sharp riffs make the album run all at once. Hansen overcame the turning point of a vocalist change by taking the microphone himself, opening the curtain on a new golden era for the band. On “Rebellion in Dreamland,” “Man on a Mission,” “Land of the Free” and “Time to Break Free,” drive and grand melody join ideally. Songs like “Fairytale” and “Salvation's Calling” breathe the band’s full creativity too. Guest voices such as Helloween’s Michael Kiske and Blind Guardian’s Hansi Kürsch add color, but at the core are Hansen’s songwriting and the band’s forward drive. Vividly sounding the free feel of power metal, it is one of the band’s signature works.
