Call of the North

『Call of the North』は、FROZEN CROWNがイタリア産パワー・メタルの疾走感と、北方の伝承めいた叙事性を高い純度で結び付けた2023年3月10日発表の第4作だ。前作で固まった6人編成のまま、曲はより研ぎ澄まされている。ジャーダ・"ジェイド"・エトロの歌は輪郭が太く、フェデリコ・モンデッリのツイン・リードが厚い旋律を織る。 表題曲が幕を開け、“Fire in the Sky”“Victorious”と速いナンバーが続く。“In a Moment”で息を整え、“Legion”“Until the End”が畳みかけ、“Far Away”で締める全10曲。スカーレット・レコード期の締めくくりにあたり、フランスの評者が年間最優秀パワー・メタル作に挙げるなど、本作の評価はバンドのそれまでで最も高かった。ダーク・トランキュリティやチルドレン・オブ・ボドムから受け取った北欧の鋭さを、イタリアの陽性なメロディへ流し込む。その配合がここでひとつの完成を見た一枚である。年に一枚に迫る勢いで書き続けてきたバンドが、その速度を保ったまま質を上げてみせた。2020年にはドラゴンフォースと帯同し、ライヴ・バンドとしての足腰も鍛えている。

Call of the North, released on 10 March 2023, is the fourth album, on which Frozen Crown tied Italian power metal's drive to a northern, folkloric epic quality at high purity. With the six-piece settled by the previous record, the songs are more sharpened. Giada “Jade” Etro's voice has a thicker outline, and Federico Mondelli's twin leads weave dense melody. The title track opens, and fast numbers follow in “Fire in the Sky” and “Victorious.” “In a Moment” catches the breath, “Legion” and “Until the End” press on, and “Far Away” closes the ten songs. It marks the end of their Scarlet Records period, and the reception was the best of their career to that point — a French reviewer named it the power metal album of the year. The Nordic sharpness taken from Dark Tranquillity and Children of Bodom is poured into a bright Italian melody, and that blend reaches a kind of completion here. A band writing at close to an album a year raised its quality while keeping that pace. In 2020 they had toured with DragonForce, hardening their live legs too.
