4 is the masterpiece, which linked Mick Jones's guitar riffs and Lou Gramm's powerful voice with meticulously polished production. Ian McDonald and Al Greenwood departed, tightening the group into a four-piece: Jones, Gramm, Rick Wills (bass) and Dennis Elliott (drums). Producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, then in high demand, was brought in, and an airtight sound was pursued. The dramatic build of "Juke Box Hero," the sharpness of "Urgent," and the lingering resonance of "Waiting for a Girl Like You" show the band can unify songs of different temperatures within one album. On "Urgent," Junior Walker's saxophone solo added vivid color. The album reached US number 1, the band's greatest commercial success. A representative AOR work where strength and delicacy coexist.
