Aura

『Aura』は、FAIR WARNINGが持つ洗練されたメロディック・ロックの魅力を、落ち着いた熱量で描いた第6作だ。2009年に発表され、前作に続き4人編成でセルフ・プロデュースを手がけた。録音は古い荘園の広間で行われており、その空気感が音にもよく表れている。前作を仲間の邸宅で録ったように、バンドは以前から変わった場所での録音を好んできた。叙情的なギター・フレーズと透明感のある歌唱が、曲に優雅な広がりを与えている。作曲の中心はヘルゲ・エンゲルケである。 派手さで押し切るのではなく、メロディとアレンジの余白を大切にしているのが印象的だ。疾走する“Fighting for Your Love”“Here Comes the Heartache”で幕を開け、“Hey Girl”“Holding On”“It Takes More”といったバラードが作品の重心を作る。ファンキーな“Station to Station”を経て、締めの“Falling Reprise”まで、聴くほどに細部の美しさが見えてくる。前作より一段と穏やかで、バラードの比重が高いのも特徴だ。同年には日本のフェスにも初出演した。上品で確かな一枚である。

Aura is the sixth album, drawing the appeal of Fair Warning's refined melodic rock with settled intensity. Released in 2009, again self-produced by the four-piece. It was recorded in the halls of an old manor house, and that atmosphere shows in the sound; as with the previous record made at a friend's villa, the band has long favored unusual recording locations. Lyrical guitar phrases and transparent singing give the songs an elegant expanse. Helge Engelke is the songwriting center. What's striking is that rather than pushing through with flash, it values the space in melody and arrangement. It opens with the racing “Fighting for Your Love” and “Here Comes the Heartache,” while ballads like “Hey Girl,” “Holding On” and “It Takes More” form the record's center of gravity. Through the funky “Station to Station” to the closing “Falling Reprise,” the beauty of the details emerges the more you listen. Calmer than the previous album, with ballads weighing heavily. That year they also played a Japanese festival for the first time — a classy, sure record.
