『Saudades de Rock』は、2004年頃の再結成を経たEXTREMEが、実に13年ぶりに放った新作にして第5作だ。ポルトガル語で「ロックへの郷愁」を意味するタイトルどおり、ヌーノ・ベッテンコートの切れ味あるギターとゲイリー・シェローンの表情豊かな歌を再び中心へ据え、ブルージーでレッド・ツェッペリンを思わせる骨太のハード・ロックを鳴らしている。パット・バジャーがベースに戻り、新ドラマーのケヴィン・フィゲイレドを迎え、自主レーベルからの発表となった。 先行シングル“Star”に続き、“Comfortably Dumb”の泥臭いリフ、“Slide”の躍動、“King of the Ladies”のキャッチーな魅力、そして“Ghost”“Interface”“Sunrise”といった美しいバラードまで、ハードなリフ、ファンク由来のリズム、繊細なメロディが曲ごとに異なる顔を見せる。技巧的な演奏は常に曲の熱量へ結び付き、軽快な曲でも重い曲でもバンドの一体感が強い。通算1000万枚超を売り上げてきたボストンの実力派が、13年の空白を感じさせない充実ぶりで、多彩さそのものを魅力として再提示した、堂々たる復活作である。

Saudades de Rock is the fifth album, released after Extreme’s reunion around 2004 as their first new material in thirteen years. True to a title meaning “nostalgic yearnings of rock” in Portuguese, it again centers Nuno Bettencourt’s sharp guitar and Gary Cherone’s expressive vocals, sounding a bluesy, Led Zeppelin-recalling brand of muscular hard rock. Pat Badger returned on bass and new drummer Kevin Figueiredo joined, with the album self-released. Following the lead single “Star,” from the earthy riffs of “Comfortably Dumb” and the drive of “Slide” to the catchy appeal of “King of the Ladies” and beautiful ballads like “Ghost,” “Interface” and “Sunrise,” hard riffs, funk-rooted rhythm and delicate melody each show a different face. The virtuosic playing always ties back to a song’s heat, and the band’s unity is strong whether light or heavy. Having sold over ten million records, the Boston veterans returned in fine form, presenting variety itself as their appeal — a confident comeback that betrays no thirteen-year gap.
