『Six』は、15年ぶりのスタジオ作にして、EXTREMEが「More Than Words」だけでは語れないバンドであることを、あらためて鮮烈に示した第6作だ。ヌーノ・ベッテンコートが自宅スタジオでプロデュースし、ゲイリー・シェローン、パット・バジャー、ケヴィン・フィゲイレドという現体制で、earMUSICから2023年に発表された。ヌーノのギターは、鋭いリフ、ファンキーなカッティング、ブルージーな表情、そして超絶的なソロを曲ごとに使い分ける。 先行曲“Rise”のソロは大きな話題を呼び、ブライアン・メイらも称賛、専門誌の読者投票で「21世紀最高のギター・ソロ」第3位に選ばれた。エディ・ヴァン・ヘイレンの死がヌーノに強い刺激を与えたという。同年ヌーノはリアーナのスーパーボウル公演にも参加し、大きな注目を集めた。疾走する“Banshee”や“#Rebel”、アコースティックな“Other Side of the Rainbow”まで、フレット・バーニングなハード・ロックと内省的なバラードの間を大胆に行き来する。モダンな質感を纏いながらも懐かしさを売りにせず、4人の個性を現在形のハード・ロックへ変換した、力強い復活作である。

Six, the band’s first studio album in fifteen years, vividly reaffirmed that Extreme is a band that cannot be summed up by “More Than Words” alone. Nuno Bettencourt produced it at his home studio, with the current lineup of Gary Cherone, Pat Badger and Kevin Figueiredo, released via earMUSIC in 2023. Nuno’s guitar switches between sharp riffs, funky cutting, bluesy shading and staggering solos from song to song. The solo on the advance track “Rise” drew huge attention, won praise from the likes of Brian May, and was voted the third-best guitar solo of the 21st century in a magazine readers’ poll. The death of Eddie Van Halen is said to have strongly spurred Nuno. That same year he also joined Rihanna’s Super Bowl performance, drawing wide notice. From the driving “Banshee” and “#Rebel” to the acoustic “Other Side of the Rainbow,” it boldly moves between fret-burning hard rock and introspective ballads. Wearing a modern texture yet never selling on nostalgia, it converts the four members’ character into present-tense hard rock — a powerful comeback.
