『Waiting for the Punchline』は、EXTREMEが従来の華やかなファンク感を抑え、太いリフとざらついた音像を前へ出した第4作だ。マイアミのクライテリア・スタジオで録音された本作は、作り込まれた前2作とは対照的に、グランジの影響を感じさせる生々しい質感が全体を覆う。宗教や名声といった社会的な題材を扱う歌詞ゆえ、コンセプト作とも評される。ヌーノとボブ・セント・ジョンが共同プロデュースし、ドラムにマイク・マンジーニが3曲で参加した、唯一の作品でもある。 ヌーノ・ベッテンコートのギターは依然として細部まで鮮やかだが、ここでは派手さより緊張感に奉仕している。“Hip Today”の切迫、“Tell Me Something I Don't Know”の重さ、“Naked”や“Leave Me Alone”の直截さは、バンドの新たな一面を示す。全米ビルボード200で40位、英国では10位、英ロック・チャートでは1位、日本のオリコンでも4位を記録した。本作のツアー後、ヌーノのソロ転向によりバンドは1996年に解散し、シェローンはヴァン・ヘイレンの新ヴォーカリストとなる。変化を恐れず硬い表情を見せた、第1期の締めくくりである。

Waiting for the Punchline is the fourth album, on which Extreme restrained their bright funk feel and pushed thick riffs and a grittier sound to the front. Recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami, it is covered by a raw texture suggesting a grunge influence, in contrast to the polished previous two records. Its lyrics on social matters such as religion and fame lead many to call it a concept album. It is also the only Extreme record to feature drummer Mike Mangini, on three tracks, co-produced by Nuno and Bob St. John. Nuno Bettencourt’s guitar remains vivid in detail, but here it serves tension over flash. The urgency of “Hip Today,” the weight of “Tell Me Something I Don't Know” and the directness of “Naked” and “Leave Me Alone” show a new side of the band. It reached number 40 on the Billboard 200, number 10 in the UK, number one on the UK Rock chart and number four on Japan’s Oricon. After its tour, Nuno’s move to a solo career broke the band up in 1996, and Cherone became Van Halen’s new singer. It closes the band’s first era with an unafraid, hard-edged face.
