『Pornograffitti』は、EXTREMEが重いリフと跳ねるリズム、厚いハーモニーを一体化させ、独自のグルーヴを完成させた第2作だ。正式には『Extreme II: Pornograffitti (A Funked Up Fairy Tale)』と題され、堕落した社会で本物の愛を探すというコンセプトを軸に、全曲をシェローンとベッテンコートが書いている。ファンクの跳ね、ハード・ロックの切れ味、キャッチーなメロディを自然に結び、シリアスな主題をユーモアで包むことで説教臭さを免れている。 アコースティック・バラード“More Than Words”は全米シングル・チャートで1位、続く“Hole Hearted”も4位を記録し、バンドを一躍スターダムへ押し上げた。一方で“Decadence Dance”“Get the Funk Out”のファンク・メタルの躍動こそ本作の核でもある。ラウンジ風の“When I First Kissed You”など振れ幅も大きい。ヌーノのギターはこの時期に一つの頂点を迎え、全米ビルボード200で10位、ダブル・プラチナを獲得。日本のバンドPorno Graffittiの名の由来にもなった、バンド最大のヒット作である。

Pornograffitti is the second album, on which Extreme united heavy riffs, bouncing rhythm and thick harmony into a groove all their own. Formally titled Extreme II: Pornograffitti (A Funked Up Fairy Tale), it is built around a concept of seeking real love in a decadent society, with every song written by Cherone and Bettencourt. It ties funk bounce, hard-rock edge and catchy melody together, wrapping serious themes in humor to avoid ever sounding preachy. The acoustic ballad “More Than Words” reached number one on the US singles chart, and “Hole Hearted” followed at number four, lifting the band to stardom. Yet the funk-metal drive of “Decadence Dance” and “Get the Funk Out” is the record’s core too, with wide range in loungey turns like “When I First Kissed You.” Nuno’s guitar hit a peak here; the album reached number 10 on the Billboard 200 and went double platinum. The band’s best-selling work, it even gave the Japanese band Porno Graffitti its name.
