Extreme

『Extreme』は、1985年にボストンで結成された4人組が、ヴァン・ヘイレン譲りのハード・ロックにファンクの跳ねを掛け合わせて示したデビュー作だ。ゲイリー・シェローン(ヴォーカル)、ヌーノ・ベッテンコート(ギター)、パット・バジャー(ベース)、ポール・ギアリー(ドラム)という布陣で、クイーンとの仕事で知られるマックがプロデュースを手がけた。後年開花するヌーノの超絶技巧はまだ全貌を見せないが、鋭いリフとファンキーなカッティング、勢いのあるコーラスに、その片鱗はすでに刻まれている。 少年時代をモチーフにした歌詞が全体を貫き、シングル“Kid Ego”や、映画『ビルとテッドの大冒険』(のちにドラマ『ストレンジャー・シングス』でも使用)で知られる“Play with Me”がその象徴だ。“Little Girls”“Mutha (Don't Wanna Go to School Today)”“Teacher's Pet”には若さと遊び心が前面に出て、“Watching, Waiting”のような繊細なバラードも顔をのぞかせる。全米ビルボード200では80位に留まったが、4人の確かな相性と次作での飛躍を予感させる、アイデアと勢いに満ちた出発点である。

Extreme is the debut album by the Boston quartet formed in 1985, pairing Van Halen-style hard rock with the bounce of funk. Recorded with Gary Cherone (vocals), Nuno Bettencourt (guitar), Pat Badger (bass) and Paul Geary (drums), it was produced by Mack, known for his work with Queen. Nuno’s later virtuosity is not yet in full view, but its seeds already show in sharp riffs, funky cutting and spirited choruses. Lyrics themed around childhood run throughout, embodied by the single “Kid Ego” and “Play with Me,” known from the film Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (and later the series Stranger Things). “Little Girls,” “Mutha (Don't Wanna Go to School Today)” and “Teacher's Pet” push youth and playfulness to the front, while delicate ballads like “Watching, Waiting” also appear. It stalled at number 80 on the US Billboard 200, but it is a starting point full of ideas and momentum, hinting at the four members’ sure chemistry and the leap to come.
