Wings of Tomorrow

『Wings of Tomorrow』は、EUROPEが後年の華やかなアリーナ・ロック像へと進む前に、正統派ヘヴィ・メタルの熱量を強く鳴らした第2作だ。ジョン・ノーラムのギターは速く、メロディアスで、ジョーイ・テンペストの伸びやかな歌に緊張感を与えている。デビュー作の勢いを受け継ぎながら、バンドはより力強い表現へと踏み出している。 “Stormwind”や“Scream of Anger”には、若いバンドならではの勢いと、すでに見えている作曲力が同居している。“Wings of Tomorrow”“Dance the Night Away”“Open Your Heart”といった楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。“Treated Bad Again”“Aphasia”“Lyin' Eyes”のような楽曲にも、若きバンドの勢いが息づいている。本作は日本でも高く評価され後の世界的なブレイクへの重要な布石となり、ジョン・ノーラムのメロディアスなギターとテンペストの伸びやかな歌声の相性の良さが際立つ一枚だ。北欧メタルの清涼感と硬いリフの両方を楽しめる本作は、初期EUROPEの魅力を凝縮した重要作だ。とりわけ“Open Your Heart”は、後に再録される名曲となった。

Wings of Tomorrow is the second album on which EUROPE strongly sounded the heat of orthodox heavy metal before advancing to their later flashy arena-rock image. John Norum’s guitar is fast and melodic, giving tension to Joey Tempest’s soaring singing. Inheriting the debut’s momentum, the band steps toward a more powerful expression. “Stormwind” and “Scream of Anger” hold the momentum particular to a young band together with an already-visible compositional skill. Songs like “Wings of Tomorrow,” “Dance the Night Away” and “Open Your Heart” breathe the band’s full playing too. Letting you enjoy both the coolness of Nordic metal and hard riffs, it is an important work condensing the appeal of early EUROPE. In particular, “Open Your Heart” became a fine song later re-recorded.
