『The Final Countdown』は、EUROPEが持つハード・ロックの推進力を、印象的なキーボードと空へ抜けるメロディで拡張した第3作だ。ジョーイ・テンペストの歌は高く伸び、ジョン・ノーラムのギターは華やかなソロと硬いリフの両方で曲を支えている。世界的な大ヒットを記録し、バンドの名を一躍知らしめた、記念碑的な一枚である。 表題曲の壮大さは言うまでもなく、“Rock the Night”“Carrie”なども、バンドのメロディ感覚を強く示している。とりわけ表題曲“The Final Countdown”は、あの象徴的なキーボード・リフとともに、80年代を代表する不朽の名曲となった。“Cherokee”“Danger on the Track”といった楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。“Time Has Come”“On the Loose”“Love Chaser”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作は全世界で1500万枚以上を売り上げてEUROPEを一躍世界的なスターへと押し上げたが、この成功の後、ギタリストのジョン・ノーラムはソロ活動に専念するため一時バンドを離れることとなった。北欧メロディック・ロックを国際的なスケールで鳴らし切った本作は、バンドの最大の代表作である。

The Final Countdown is the third album on which EUROPE expanded their hard-rock drive with impressive keyboards and sky-piercing melody. Joey Tempest’s singing soars high, and John Norum’s guitar supports the songs with both flashy solos and hard riffs. It is a monumental record that recorded a worldwide smash and made the band’s name known at a stroke. The grandeur of the title track goes without saying, and “Rock the Night” and “Carrie” also strongly show the band’s melodic sense. In particular, the title track “The Final Countdown,” with that iconic keyboard riff, became an enduring song representative of the 1980s. Songs like “Cherokee” and “Danger on the Track” breathe the band’s full playing too. Sounding Nordic melodic rock on an international scale, it is the band’s greatest signature work.
