『Europe』は、EUROPEが勢いあるギター、明るいキーボード、ジョーイ・テンペストの高く抜ける歌声を組み合わせたデビュー作だ。荒削りさを残しながらも、曲にはすでに大きなメロディを目指す意志が見える。スウェーデンのバンド・コンテストでの優勝をきっかけにデビューを果たした、彼らの記念すべき出発点である。 “Seven Doors Hotel”をはじめ、疾走感のある曲と叙情的なパートが自然に交差している。“In The Future To Come”“The King Will Return”“Memories”といった楽曲にも、若きバンドの熱量が息づいている。“Farewell”“Children Of This Time”“Words Of Wisdom”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい叙情が息づいている。バンドはこのデビュー作で母国スウェーデンを中心に注目を集め、ネオクラシカルな要素を含むジョン・ノーラムのギター・プレイはこの時点で早くも高い評価を得ていた。北欧ハード・ロックの新星の登場を告げる一枚である。ジョン・ノーラムの流麗なギターと、テンペストの伸びやかな歌声という、後のバンドの核となる要素はすでに揃っている。後年の洗練へと直結するフックと熱量を持った本作は、バンドの原点として重要な一枚である。

Europe is the debut on which EUROPE combined driving guitar, bright keyboards and Joey Tempest’s high, clear voice. Roughness remains, yet a will to aim for big melody is already visible in the songs. It is their memorable starting point, having debuted on the back of winning a Swedish band contest. Led by “Seven Doors Hotel,” driving songs and lyrical passages cross naturally. Songs like “In The Future To Come,” “The King Will Return” and “Memories” breathe the young band’s heat too. The core elements of the later band — John Norum’s flowing guitar and Tempest’s soaring voice — are already in place. With hooks and heat leading directly to the later refinement, it is an important record as the band’s origin.
