Secret Society

『Secret Society』は、EUROPEが再結成後のより重くダークな方向性を推し進めた作品だ。ジョン・ノーラムのギターは鋭くブルージーに響き、ジョーイ・テンペストの歌は華やかさを保ちながら曲に陰影を加えている。前作で示した路線を、さらに深化させた一枚である。 “Secret Society”“Always the Pretenders”“Devil Sings the Blues”といった楽曲では、80年代の大合唱感をただ繰り返すのではなく、リフの重さと緊張感あるアレンジでバンドの新しい表情を描いている。“Let the Children Play”“Human After All”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した表現力が息づいている。“The Getaway Plan”“Wish I Could Believe”“Forever Travelling”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作では80年代のイメージを大胆に脱ぎ捨て、より重厚でブルージーなサウンドがいっそう深められており、ジョン・ノーラムのブルージーなギターが作品に深い味わいを与えている。成熟したEUROPEが、自分たちの歴史を背負いながら前へと進む本作は、再始動期の充実を伝える一枚である。

Secret Society is a work on which EUROPE pushed further the heavier, darker direction of their post-reunion phase. John Norum’s guitar rings sharply and bluesily, and Joey Tempest’s singing keeps its flair while adding shadow to the songs. It is a record that further deepened the direction shown on the previous album. On “Secret Society,” “Always the Pretenders” and “Devil Sings the Blues,” rather than simply repeating the 1980s mass sing-along, they draw a new face of the band with weighty riffs and tense arrangement. Songs like “Let the Children Play” and “Human After All” breathe the band’s full expressiveness too. On this record, a matured EUROPE moves forward while carrying its own history — conveying the fullness of the restarted phase.
