『Design Your Universe』は、管弦楽、合唱、ヘヴィなリフを壮大に統合した、EPICAのシンフォニック・メタルを代表する第4作だ。ギタリストのアイザック・デラエイと、ドラマーのアリエン・ファン・ウェーセンベークが加入した最初の作品であり、多くのファンや批評家からバンドの金字塔と評される飛躍作である。前作『Consign to Oblivion』で始まった組曲「A New Age Dawns」の第4章から第6章を収めている。オランダのチャートで8位に達し、当時のバンドにとって最高位を記録した。 13分に及ぶ“Kingdom of Heaven”は、プログレッシヴな展開を極めた大曲だ。冒頭の“Resign to Surrender”から、シングルの“Unleashed”、そして壮大な表題曲へと至る構成は圧巻である。シモーネ・シモンズの歌唱と、デラエイの華麗なギターが全編を牽引し、コーエン・ヤンセンのキーボードとオーケストラも壮麗に鳴り響く。クラシカルとメタルの完璧な融合を体現した、バンドの代表作の一つである。ザッシャ・パエスのプロデュースのもと、緻密なオーケストレーションと重厚なリフを高い次元で統合している。

Design Your Universe is Epica's fourth album, a representative symphonic-metal work that grandly integrated orchestra, choir and heavy riffs. It is the first album with guitarist Isaac Delahaye and drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek, a breakthrough hailed by many fans and critics as the band's landmark. It contains parts four through six of the suite "A New Age Dawns," begun on the previous Consign to Oblivion. It reached No. 8 in the Netherlands, the band's highest chart position at the time. The 13-minute "Kingdom of Heaven" is an epic that perfects progressive development. From the opener "Resign to Surrender" to the single "Unleashed" and on to the grand title track, the structure is stunning. Simone Simons's singing and Delahaye's brilliant guitar drive the whole record, with Coen Janssen's keyboards and orchestra ringing out splendidly as well. Embodying a perfect fusion of the classical and the metal, it is one of the band's signature works. Under Sascha Paeth's production, it integrates meticulous orchestration and weighty riffs at a high level.
