Requiem for the Indifferent

『Requiem for the Indifferent』は、壮大な管弦楽とヘヴィなリフを通じ、EPICAが社会的なテーマを劇的に描いた第5作だ。宗教や文化の対立、戦争、自然災害、金融危機といった、現代社会が直面する問題を主題に掲げ、これまでよりもダークで多面的な音像を築いている。“Internal Warfare”は2011年のノルウェー連続テロの犠牲者に、“Deep Water Horizon”は原油流出事故に、それぞれ着想を得ている。ベーシストのイヴ・ハッツが参加した最後の作品でもあり、英国と全米のチャートに初めて登場した一枚でもある。 シングルとなった“Storm the Sorrow”は、疾走感と大きなサビを備えた代表曲だ。冒頭の荘厳な“Karma”から、ダークな“Guilty Demeanor”、そして10分近い終曲“Serenade of Self-Destruction”まで、振れ幅の大きな楽曲が並ぶ。シモーネ・シモンズの歌唱と、マーク・ヤンセンのグロウルが激しく交差する。ザッシャ・パエスのプロデュースのもと、バンドの成熟を刻んだ意欲作である。多彩な要素をシームレスに結び付けた、EPICAでも屈指のダイナミックな一枚だ。

Requiem for the Indifferent is Epica's fifth album, on which they dramatically depicted social themes through grand orchestra and heavy riffs. Taking as its subject the problems facing modern society — clashes between religions and cultures, war, natural disasters, financial crisis — it builds a darker, more many-sided sound than before. "Internal Warfare" is dedicated to the victims of the 2011 Norway attacks, and "Deep Water Horizon" draws on the oil-spill disaster. It is also the last album to feature bassist Yves Huts, and the first to enter the UK and US charts. The single "Storm the Sorrow" is a signature song with drive and a big chorus. From the solemn opener "Karma" to the dark "Guilty Demeanor" and the nearly ten-minute closer "Serenade of Self-Destruction," songs of wide range line up. Simone Simons's singing and Mark Jansen's growls cross fiercely. Under Sascha Paeth's production, it is an ambitious work carving the band's maturation. Seamlessly connecting varied elements, it is one of Epica's most dynamic records.
