High 'n' Dry

『High 'n' Dry』は、DEF LEPPARDがNWOBHM由来の荒々しさを保ちながら、より整理されたリフ、重ねたコーラス、強いメロディへと進んだ第2作だ。ギターは硬く、リズムは引き締まり、曲の一つひとつに大きなフックが置かれている。名プロデューサー、ロバート・ジョン・“マット”・ラングを迎え、バンドのサウンドは飛躍的に洗練された。 “Let It Go”の疾走感と“Bringin' On the Heartbreak”の哀感は、バンドが攻撃性と歌心を同時に育てていたことを示している。“Switch 625”“High 'n' Dry (Saturday Night)”“Lady Strange”といった楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。“You Got Me Runnin'”“Mirror, Mirror (Look Into My Eyes)”“No No No”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい荒々しさが息づいている。1981年に発表された本作は後の大ブレイクへの重要な布石となり、ハードなロック・サウンドとメロディ・センスの両立が早くも際立っている。80年代の巨大なサウンドへと続く設計図が、すでに明確に見える一枚である。とりわけバラード“Bringin' On the Heartbreak”は、後に何度も再演される、バンドの重要なレパートリーとなった。

High 'n' Dry is the second album on which DEF LEPPARD, while keeping the roughness derived from the NWOBHM, moved toward more organized riffs, layered choruses and strong melody. The guitar is hard, the rhythm tight, and a big hook is placed in each song. Welcoming the great producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange, the band’s sound became dramatically refined. The drive of “Let It Go” and the melancholy of “Bringin' On the Heartbreak” show that the band was cultivating aggression and melodic sense at once. Songs like “Switch 625,” “High 'n' Dry (Saturday Night)” and “Lady Strange” breathe the band’s full playing too. The blueprint leading to the huge sound of the 1980s is already clearly visible. In particular, the ballad “Bringin' On the Heartbreak” became an important part of the band’s repertoire, later re-recorded many times.
