Euphoria

『Euphoria』は、DEF LEPPARDが多重コーラス、きらびやかなギター、即効性の高いフックを改めて前面に出した作品だ。緻密に重ねた音像でありながら、曲そのものは簡潔で、ライヴでの大合唱を思わせる開放感を持っている。前作での実験を経て、バンドは自らの黄金期を思わせる王道のサウンドへと回帰した。 “Promises”“Demolition Man”“Goodbye”“Paper Sun”といった楽曲では、甘さのあるメロディと硬質なリフが互いを引き立て、アルバム全体を明るく押し進めている。“All Night”“21st Century Sha La La La Girl”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実したメロディ・センスが息づいている。“It's Only Love”“Guilty”“Kings of Oblivion”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。前作『Slang』での実験を経て原点回帰を果たした本作は往年のサウンドを鮮やかに甦らせており、先行シングル“Promises”は久々に古典的なDEF LEPPARDサウンドを聴かせてファンを大いに喜ばせた。バンドのポップ感覚とロックの推進力が自然に結び付いた本作は、往年のファンを歓喜させた、後期の充実作だ。

Euphoria is a work on which DEF LEPPARD again foregrounded multilayered choruses, glittering guitar and highly immediate hooks. Even with a densely layered sound image, the songs themselves are concise, holding an openness evoking a live sing-along. After the experiment of the previous album, the band returned to a royal-road sound reminiscent of their golden era. On “Promises,” “Demolition Man,” “Goodbye” and “Paper Sun,” sweet melody and hard riffs set each other off, pushing the whole album along brightly. Songs like “All Night” and “21st Century Sha La La La Girl” breathe the band’s full melodic sense too. With the band’s pop sense and rock drive joining naturally, it is a full later-period record that delighted longtime fans.
