『Slang』は、DEF LEPPARDが大作主義の光沢を意識的に薄め、低く重いギター、乾いたリズム、内省的な歌に向き合った作品だ。大合唱の即効性より、曲が持つ湿度や緊張を大切にしている。ヴィヴィアン・キャンベルが正式加入して初のフル・アルバムであり、90年代のオルタナティヴな空気を反映した、意欲的な方向転換の一枚である。 “Truth?”“Slang”“Work It Out”“All I Want Is Everything”といった楽曲では、従来のイメージから距離を取る決断が、ジョー・エリオットの声やバンドのアンサンブルに新しい影を与えている。“Breathe a Sigh”“Deliver Me”のような楽曲にも、これまでとは異なる繊細な表現が息づいている。“Turn to Dust”“Gift of Flesh”“Where Does Love Go When It Dies”のような楽曲にも、実験的な試みが息づいている。アコースティックやオルタナティヴ・ロックの要素を大胆に取り入れた本作は賛否を呼びながらもバンドの新たな表現の幅を示し、従来のポップ・メタルとは一線を画す内容となっている。90年代半ばの空気を受け止めながら、自分たちの輪郭を探った本作は、バンドの新たな一面を示す、興味深い一枚である。

Slang is a work on which DEF LEPPARD deliberately thinned the gloss of their epic approach, facing low, heavy guitar, dry rhythm and introspective singing. Rather than the immediacy of mass sing-alongs, they value the songs’ humidity and tension. It is the first full album after Vivian Campbell officially joined, and an ambitious change of direction reflecting the alternative air of the 1990s. On “Truth?,” “Slang,” “Work It Out” and “All I Want Is Everything,” the decision to take distance from the established image gives new shadow to Joe Elliott’s voice and the band’s ensemble. Songs like “Breathe a Sigh” and “Deliver Me” breathe a delicate expression different from before too. Taking in the air of the mid-1990s while searching for their own outline, it is an intriguing record showing a new side of the band.
