Whoosh!

本作『Whoosh!』は、名プロデューサー、ボブ・エズリンとの協働を継続したDEEP PURPLEが、ハード・ロックの持つ重量感と、軽妙で自由な遊び心とを、見事に同居させた第21作だ。スティーヴ・モーズのギター、ドン・エイリーの鍵盤、そしてイアン・ギランの独特な歌声が、長年の豊富な経験を誇示することなく、あくまで自然な会話を続けていく。 冒頭“Throw My Bones”のキャッチーさ、“Drop the Weapon”の攻撃性、“Man Alive”のドラマ性、そして“Nothing at All”の叙情まで、収録曲は幅広い表情を見せている。重いリフで押し切る曲だけでなく、ブルース、プログレッシヴ・ロック、そして少し風変わりなポップ感覚までもが、自然に混ざり合っているのが本作の特徴だ。“We're All the Same in the Dark”のような曲も光る。 その柔軟で懐の深い音楽性が、単なる懐古では決してない、現在進行形のDEEP PURPLE像を、明確に作り上げている。肩の力を抜きながらも、演奏の芯は少しも揺らいでいない。ベテランとなってなお、その創作意欲と演奏の妙が全く衰えていないことを証明した、円熟味あふれる充実作と言える。

Whoosh! is the twenty-first album on which Deep Purple, continuing its collaboration with the famous producer Bob Ezrin, beautifully unites the weight of hard rock with a light, free playfulness. Steve Morse’s guitar, Don Airey’s keyboards and Ian Gillan’s distinctive voice carry on a natural conversation without flaunting their long, ample experience. From the catchiness of the opener “Throw My Bones” and the aggression of “Drop the Weapon” to the drama of “Man Alive” and the lyricism of “Nothing at All,” the songs show wide-ranging faces. Its distinction is that, beyond songs pushed through with heavy riffs, blues, progressive rock and a slightly quirky pop sense mix naturally, while a cut like “We’re All the Same in the Dark” also shines. That flexible, deep musicality clearly builds an ongoing image of Deep Purple that is by no means mere nostalgia. Unforced yet with the core of the playing not wavering in the least, proving that even as veterans its creative drive and deftness have not dimmed at all, it is a maturity-filled, fulfilling record.
