『Infinite』は、DEEP PURPLE(第7期)がブルース、ハード・ロック、即興性という長年の核を、落ち着きと熱量を両立させながら鳴らした第20作だ。イアン・ギラン(ヴォーカル)、スティーヴ・モーズ(ギター)、ドン・エイリー(キーボード)、ロジャー・グローヴァー(ベース)、イアン・ペイス(ドラム)という布陣で、プロデューサーには『Now What?!』以来のボブ・エズリンを迎えた。ギランの歌は年輪を重ねた表情を持ち、モーズのギターは鋭いリフと流麗なソロを行き来する。 “Time for Bedlam”の重厚な導入、“The Surprising”の劇的な展開は、五人がフレーズを渡し合う瞬間の面白さを丁寧に聞かせる。ドアーズの“Roadhouse Blues”のカヴァーも収録し、バンドのルーツへの敬意を示した。本作は全英6位を記録し、高い評価を得た。“Hip Boots”“Birds of Prey”のような楽曲でも、モーズのギターとエイリーの鍵盤が緊密に対話する。長いキャリアの経験が、演奏の自由さではなく曲の説得力として働いている。伝説的なバンドが歴史に寄り掛からず、今の五人でしか出せない手触りを提示した、重厚かつ風通しの良い一枚である。

Infinite is the twentieth album, on which Deep Purple (Mark VII) sounded their long-held core of blues, hard rock and improvisation while balancing calm and heat. With the lineup of Ian Gillan (vocals), Steve Morse (guitar), Don Airey (keyboards), Roger Glover (bass) and Ian Paice (drums), producer Bob Ezrin was welcomed, as since Now What?!. Gillan's singing has an expression grown with age, and Morse's guitar moves between sharp riffs and flowing solos. The weighty intro of "Time for Bedlam" and the dramatic development of "The Surprising" carefully let you hear the fun of the moments the five hand phrases to each other. A cover of The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" is also included, showing respect for the band's roots. The album reached UK number 6 and won high acclaim. A weighty yet airy record on which the legendary band, not leaning on its history, presented a texture only the present five can produce.
