本作『Turning to Crime』は、DEEP PURPLEが、自分たちに影響を与えた他者の楽曲だけで組み立てた、バンド史上初となる、全曲カヴァーのスタジオ・アルバムだ。ブルース、ロックンロール、ソウルなど、実に幅広いジャンルから選ばれた素材に、ドン・エイリーの鍵盤、スティーヴ・モーズのギター、そしてイアン・ギランの歌が加わることで、どの曲にも、紛れもないDEEP PURPLEらしい呼吸が生まれている。 クリームの“White Room”、フリートウッド・マックの“Oh Well”、ヤードバーズの“Shapes of Things”、そしてボブ・ディランの“Watching the River Flow”まで、選曲そのものが、メンバーの音楽的なルーツと、幅広い嗜好を物語っている。原曲への忠実さだけを目的にするのではなく、バンドならではの即興性と、アンサンブルの会話を前面に押し出している点が、何よりの魅力だ。 長年のレパートリーをただなぞるのではなく、自らの影響源を、現在のバンド・サウンドで、自由に遊び直した作品として聴くのが楽しい。ベテランならではの余裕と、演奏する喜びとが、全編にあふれている。DEEP PURPLEの音楽的な背景を、また別の角度から立体的に楽しめる、遊び心に満ちたユニークなカヴァー作品と言える。

Turning to Crime is the first all-covers studio album in Deep Purple’s history, built only from songs by others who influenced them. To material chosen from a truly wide range of genres — blues, rock and roll, soul and more — are added Don Airey’s keyboards, Steve Morse’s guitar and Ian Gillan’s singing, so that an unmistakably Deep Purple breath arises in every song. From Cream’s “White Room” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well” to the Yardbirds’ “Shapes of Things” and Bob Dylan’s “Watching the River Flow,” the very selection tells of the members’ musical roots and broad tastes. Its greatest appeal is foregrounding the band’s own improvisation and ensemble conversation rather than aiming only for fidelity to the originals. It is fun to hear as a work that, rather than merely tracing a long-standing repertoire, freely plays its influences anew in the present-day band sound.
