The Battle Rages On...

『The Battle Rages On...』は、DEEP PURPLEが重厚なハード・ロックのリフと、緊張感あふれるアンサンブルを前面に置き、再び硬い輪郭を描いた作品だ。ジョー・リン・ターナーに代わり、再びイアン・ギランがヴォーカルに復帰。黄金期のMk II編成が、再結集して制作された一枚である。ギランの張りのある声と、リズム隊の安定感が、音の緊張をさらに強めている。 冒頭の表題曲“The Battle Rages On”の劇的な展開、“Anya”の東洋的で幻想的な雰囲気、“Talk About Love”の疾走、そして“Time to Kill”のドラマ性まで、収録曲はいずれも充実している。ギターとオルガンは、互いに激しく主張し合いながらも、曲の中で一切の隙を与えず、見事に渡り合っていく。 往年の様式をただなぞるだけでなく、成熟した演奏者同士が、時に激しくぶつかり合う、その緊迫した瞬間を、そのまま音楽の推進力へと変えている点に、本作の魅力がある。バンド内の複雑な人間関係を思わせる緊張が、かえって作品に生々しい熱を与えているのだ。“Ramshackle Man”“Solitaire”“One Man's Meat”のような曲でも、重いリフと緊張感あるアンサンブルが結び付いている。硬質でドラマティックな、聴き応えのあるハード・ロック作品と言える。

The Battle Rages On... is a record on which Deep Purple puts weighty hard-rock riffs and a tension-filled ensemble to the front, again drawing a hard outline. In place of Joe Lynn Turner, Ian Gillan returned to vocals again, and it was made by the reunited golden-era Mark II lineup. Gillan’s taut voice and the rhythm section’s steadiness further strengthen the sonic tension. From the dramatic development of the opening title track “The Battle Rages On” and the Eastern, fantastical air of “Anya” to the speed of “Talk About Love” and the drama of “Time to Kill,” every song is fulfilling. The guitar and organ assert themselves fiercely against each other yet cross swords beautifully within the songs, giving no opening at all. Its appeal is turning the tense moments when mature players sometimes collide fiercely directly into musical drive, rather than merely tracing the old style. Tension suggesting complex relationships within the band gives the record a raw heat instead. It is a hard-edged, dramatic, engaging hard-rock record.
