『Slaves and Masters』は、ヴォーカリストとして、レインボーでも活躍したジョー・リン・ターナーを新たに迎え、DEEP PURPLEがこれまでとは別の色彩を見せた、異色の第13作だ。ターナーの、伸びやかで洗練されたメロディックな歌声は、バンドのサウンドに、これまでにない新鮮な表情を与えている。より産業ロック的な、キャッチーな側面が前面に出た一枚である。 冒頭のヒット曲“King of Dreams”の劇的な推進力、美しいバラード“Love Conquers All”の叙情、そして“The Cut Runs Deep”の攻撃性まで、収録曲はメロディックな魅力に満ちている。“Fire in the Basement”“Fortuneteller”のような曲も、ターナー時代ならではの、洗練された音楽性を伝えている。 イアン・ギランが在籍した黄金期の様式とは大きく異なるため、賛否は分かれるものの、リッチー・ブラックモアの嗜好が色濃く反映された、興味深い作品であることは間違いない。バンドの長い歴史の中でも、特に異色の位置を占める一枚だ。DEEP PURPLEの、また別の可能性を垣間見せる、メロディックで聴きやすい佳作と言える。

Slaves and Masters is an unusual thirteenth album on which Deep Purple, newly welcoming vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, who also thrived in Rainbow, shows a color different from before. Turner’s soaring, refined, melodic voice gives the band’s sound a fresh face it had not had. A record on which a more arena-rock, catchy side comes to the fore. From the dramatic drive of the opening hit “King of Dreams” and the lyricism of the beautiful ballad “Love Conquers All” to the aggression of “The Cut Runs Deep,” the songs are full of melodic appeal, while cuts like “Fire in the Basement” and “Fortuneteller” convey a refined musicality particular to the Turner era. Because it differs greatly from the golden-era style with Ian Gillan, views are divided, yet it is without doubt an intriguing work strongly reflecting Ritchie Blackmore’s tastes. Even in the band’s long history, it occupies a particularly unusual place. Glimpsing another possibility of Deep Purple, it is a melodic, accessible fine work.
