『Perfect Strangers』は、黄金期のMk II編成が再び集結し、DEEP PURPLEが重厚なリフと、神秘的な空気を取り戻した、記念すべき第11作だ。各メンバーの強烈な個性を、改めて一つの強い音へとまとめ上げている。リッチー・ブラックモアのギターと、ジョン・ロードのオルガンは、緊張感あふれる対話を繰り広げ、イアン・ギランの歌が、曲に劇的な芯を与えていく。 印象的なリフを持つ“Knocking at Your Back Door”や、荘厳で不穏な空気に満ちた表題曲“Perfect Strangers”は、この再結成が、単なる懐古では決してないことを高らかに示している。“Under the Gun”の疾走、“Nobody's Home”の攻撃性、そして“Wasted Sunsets”の叙情まで、収録曲はいずれも充実している。 長い活動休止を経てもなお、5人の演奏が生み出す化学反応が、全く色褪せていない点に、本作の大きな価値がある。クラシックな様式を、80年代らしい現代的な重さで力強く鳴らしている。往年のファンの期待に見事に応えた、堂々たる復活作であり、円熟期のDEEP PURPLEを代表する名盤と言える。

Perfect Strangers is a memorable eleventh album on which the golden-era Mark II lineup gathers again and Deep Purple recovers weighty riffs and a mysterious air. It pulls each member’s powerful character into one strong sound anew. Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar and Jon Lord’s organ carry on a tension-filled dialogue, and Ian Gillan’s singing gives the songs a dramatic core. “Knocking at Your Back Door,” with its striking riff, and the title track “Perfect Strangers,” full of a solemn, uneasy air, loftily show that this reunion is by no means mere nostalgia, while from the speed of “Under the Gun” and the aggression of “Nobody’s Home” to the lyricism of “Wasted Sunsets,” every song is fulfilling. Its great value is that, even after a long hiatus, the chemistry the five members’ playing creates has not faded at all. It powerfully sounds the classic style with a modern, 1980s weight. A dignified comeback that splendidly met longtime fans’ expectations, it is a masterpiece representative of mature Deep Purple.
