『Come Taste the Band』は、リッチー・ブラックモアに代わって、新たに若きギタリスト、トミー・ボーリンを迎えたDEEP PURPLEが、従来の重いハード・ロックへ、ファンク、ソウル、ブルースの感覚を深く混ぜ合わせた第10作だ。デイヴィッド・カヴァデールとグレン・ヒューズの、対照的な二つのヴォーカルが絡み合い、イアン・ペイスのドラムが、全体を強く前へと押し出していく。 冒頭“Comin' Home”の疾走感、“Gettin' Tighter”の粘り強いグルーヴ、そして名曲“You Keep on Moving”の壮大な余韻まで、収録曲はこの編成ならではの、新しい音楽的な幅を伝えている。“Dealer”“Lady Luck”“This Time Around”のような曲も、ボーリンの流麗なギターと、ファンキーな感覚を存分に示している。 ブラックモア時代の様式とは大きく異なる、DEEP PURPLEの本流からは外れた異色作でありながら、各メンバーの豊かな個性が、これ以上ないほど濃密に交わっている点が本作の魅力だ。惜しくも第一期の最後を飾る作品となったが、その音楽的な冒険心と充実は際立っている。新たな才能が吹き込んだ、多彩で魅力的なハード・ロック作品と言える。

Come Taste the Band is the tenth album on which Deep Purple, newly welcoming the young guitarist Tommy Bolin in place of Ritchie Blackmore, deeply blends a funk, soul and blues sense into its former heavy hard rock. The two contrasting vocals of David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes intertwine, and Ian Paice’s drums strongly push the whole forward. From the speed of the opener “Comin’ Home” and the tenacious groove of “Gettin’ Tighter” to the grand afterglow of the classic “You Keep on Moving,” the songs convey a new musical breadth particular to this lineup, while cuts like “Dealer,” “Lady Luck” and “This Time Around” fully show Bolin’s fluid guitar and funky sense. Its appeal is that, though an unusual work apart from Deep Purple’s mainstream and greatly different from the Blackmore-era style, each member’s rich character intertwines as densely as possible. Sadly becoming the work that capped the first era, its musical adventurousness and fullness stand out. A varied, appealing hard-rock record breathed into by new talent.
